this post is part of the category ‘inspiration’ and does not include a recipe for a certain meal or dish. it does contain a recipe for a healthy, fulfilling and, most importantly, happy life though! so if you wanna find out five simple ways on how to be happy, keep reading.
before jumping right into this post, i wanna explicitly say that they are obviously more than just five ways that lead to a happy state of mind but these are some that have been working for me in the past and that i feel are worth to share AND relatively easy to implement in your everyday life. so let’s get started.
# 1 live, laugh, love.
live every moment, laugh every day, love beyond words. this seems so obvious but many of us seem to forget about these three simple things most days of the year. it’s for a reason that this is number one on my list, so make sure to really think about yourself and your loved ones.
how many times a day do you tell your boyfriend or girlfriend how much you love them and how grateful you are to have them in your life? how often do you hug your parents to make sure you let them know how much you appreciate them being part of your life? how many times a year do you visit your good old friends who have moved to a different city or to a different country?
and one more hint here – when you go for a morning run, afternoon walk, maybe even a hike – how many times are you listening to music and not paying attention to all the beautiful things surrounding you? how many times have you just stopped, enjoyed the moment, soaked it all in and maybe even just smiled all by yourself because you’re just grateful for this day?
# 2 moments.
cherish each and every single moment in life. seems impossible at first and to be honest, i partly agree. it’s hard and definitely not something that you can implement right away. i’m not saying it’s not easy to implement because these tips are all about being fairly simple. but all i wanna say is that i do know it’s very hard to fully live the moments, especially in the beginning.
if you want to start appreciating every single moment of your life, a huge help could be beans/small balls/rocks or whatever you might have at hand. what comes next may sound weird to you, and i haven’t tried it either (not yet) but i will for sure one day.
put all items that you found in your left pocket of your pants. throughout the day, whenever you experience something nice or are able to hold still and actually cherish the moment, put one item from the left to the right pocket. at the end of your day, when you take off your clothes to go to bed, take out all items from each pocket and count them. now you can clearly see how many good moments you’ve had during your all-time busy and hectic day.
as you count each, remind yourself what made you transfer this item from one pocket to the other and why this moment might have been a precious moment. i’m sure many would say it’s a weird thing to do but i would say it’s a simple and powerful technique to remind yourself of living in the moment.
# 3 be content.
while we, who are lucky enough to live in the first world, constantly worry about what clothes to wear, who has the most expensive make-up or drives the fanciest of all cars, others who have much less things, still consider themselves as happy. why is this so?
as you can see in this world happiness report of 2016 (page 20) people from less developed countries such as uruguay, taiwan, nicaragua, uzbekistan and ecuador find themselves among some of the most developed and richest countries in the whole world. well, if you want to dive deeper into this topic, i can highly recommend the website of the world happiness report, all their resources are freely available to browse through and even for download.
my rather simple answer to this most likely very complex topic is that we do not need most of the things surrounding us. live a more minimalistic life and get to experience the magic happening by letting go!
# 4 calm down.
try to unwind from your daily routine every once in a while, but at least once a day. many of us enjoy meditating in the morning – i can’t do it though. some like to relax while doing yoga either in the morning or in the evening – not for me either. others might want to read and enjoy a cup of tea in the afternoon in order to be able to calm down from the busy schedules we all have. tried that, but i usually read whenever it fits into my day, and some days i don’t even read at all.
what i do to calm down then? i usually go for a run, sometimes even late at night, or go on a hike. and while i generally enjoy good company when exploring nature, some days, especially on the busier days, i consciously choose to go by myself and enjoy some very needed me time. whatever it is to help you calm down, try to find your best techniques and apply them throughout the day to achieve more happiness.
# 5 eat well, feel well.
well, i hope this doesn’t come as a surprise to you all 😉 if you eat well, you will feel well because you are what you eat, right? whatever you put into your body, will either help you to either nourish it or ruin it. joely fisher once said –
‘i just believe that whatever you put into your system you’re going to see on your face and your body’
and that makes a lot of sense, believe me. so each and everyday you get to choose if you want to fuel your body with valuable, high-quality food or damage it with highly-processed and nutrient-poor ‘food’. if you don’t know where to start, get your inspiration for a whole-food, plant-based diet in the recipe section of this blog and learn more about clean eating here.
i hope these tips will help you all to appreciate life a bit more, no matter in what situation you might be right now. if you have any other ideas on how to live a happy life and achieve daily happiness, make sure to comment or drop me a message. here’s to a healthy and happy day, every day of the year!
